The National Center for Seismology (NCS) said the quake struck at 12:06 pm IST, with its epicentre located nearly 90 km away and at a depth of 10 km. Authorities confirmed that no loss of life or property had been reported so far.
In the minutes that followed, global monitoring agencies released their own assessments, highlighting slight variations in magnitude. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded the tremor at 6.07, maintaining the same depth of 10 km, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated the magnitude at 5.5. Despite the differences, officials emphasised that the quake was shallow, a type known to produce stronger surface shaking due to the shorter travel distance of seismic waves.&nbsp;Amid initial anxiety, Malaysia&rsquo;s authorities confirmed there was &ldquo;no tsunami threat&rdquo; linked to the Andaman tremors.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie within one of the world&rsquo;s most active seismic belts, classified as Seismic Zone V, the highest-risk category in India. This zone includes the entire Northeast, parts of Jammu &amp; Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, north Bihar, the Rann of Kutch, and the Andaman&ndash;Nicobar region, areas prone to frequent tectonic movement. As monitoring continues, officials have urged residents to remain alert but avoid panic, noting that the region&rsquo;s vulnerability requires constant preparedness for future seismic events.
