Four people lost their lives and 17 others sustained injuries when a tempo traveller fell into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Doda district on Tuesday morning.
The accident occurred in the Ponda area along the Doda-Bhart road when the vehicle reportedly went out of the driver&rsquo;s control. Authorities launched a rescue operation immediately after receiving the alert.
&ldquo;Four passengers died on the spot, and 17 others were injured. All the injured have been rushed to the hospital. Some are in critical condition,&rdquo; said local officials.
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and volunteers were involved in the ongoing rescue operation. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh posted on X, &ldquo;Just spoke to DC Doda Harvinder Singh regarding the tempo accident near Bhart village, 20&ndash;25 km from Doda town. Three casualties confirmed earlier, with four critically injured. Medical assistance is being provided.&rdquo;
Doda and other hilly districts in Jammu &mdash; including Kishtwar, Ramban, Poonch, Reasi, and Rajouri &mdash; have witnessed frequent fatal road accidents due to poor road conditions, overspeeding, and negligent driving.
Authorities have deployed special monitoring squads and issued strict warnings under the Motor Vehicles Act. In severe cases, vehicle registration and driver&rsquo;s licenses may be cancelled, and parents may face legal action if minors are found driving.
