An earthquake struck the Delhi-NCR region in the early hours of Monday, causing panic among residents. The tremors, registering a magnitude of 4.0, were felt at approximately 5.36 am and had a depth of 5km, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The earthquake&rsquo;s epicentre was located at a latitude of 28.59 North and longitude of 77.16 East, affecting areas such as Delhi, Noida, Indirapuram, and other parts of the National Capital Region. Despite the tremors lasting only a few seconds, their intensity led many to rush out of their homes in panic as a precautionary measure.
The NCS confirmed the event in a post on social media, stating: &ldquo;EQ of M: 4.0, On: 17/02/2025 05:36:55 IST, Lat: 28.59 N, Long: 77.16 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: New Delhi, Delhi.&rdquo;
No immediate reports of casualties or significant property damage have emerged, but authorities continue to monitor the situation. Delhi-NCR is located in Seismic Zone IV, making it susceptible to moderate to strong earthquakes. Residents have been urged to stay alert and follow safety protocols.
Political leaders took to social media to express their concerns.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the public to stay calm and follow safety precautions, writing on social media: &ldquo;Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation.&rdquo;
Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi shared her thoughts, saying, &ldquo;A strong earthquake just hit Delhi. I pray to God that everyone is safe.&rdquo; AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal also expressed his sentiments: &ldquo;I pray for the safety of everyone.&rdquo;
Experts continue to monitor the situation, emphasising the importance of earthquake preparedness and awareness in seismic-prone regions like Delhi-NCR.
