A massive 32-hour-long traffic jam brought the Indore-Dewas highway in Madhya Pradesh to a standstill, trapping over 4,000 vehicles along an 8-kilometre stretch and resulting in the deaths of three people.
Among the victims was 62-year-old Kamal Panchal from Bijalpur, Indore, who was en route with his family to attend his sister&rsquo;s post-funeral ceremony. Their vehicle got stuck near Arjun Baroda due to a diversion, and Panchal collapsed inside the car. With no immediate medical help and traffic frozen for over 90 minutes, he could only be taken to a hospital in Dewas after the road cleared&mdash;by then, he was declared dead.
In another case, 32-year-old Sandeep Patel from Gari Pipalya was being rushed to Indore following medical advice. However, his vehicle was caught in the snarl for three hours near Dewas Naka. He suffered a suspected heart attack and died before reaching the hospital.
The third victim, 55-year-old cancer patient Balram Patel from Shujalpur, died in his vehicle after his oxygen supply depleted. Despite having two cylinders, both ran out while the family remained stranded. Even during their return journey with his body, they were caught in traffic again for an hour.
The chaos has triggered public outrage. Dewas Congress president Manoj Rajani has demanded the construction of a service road before the main bridge is completed and called for toll suspension until conditions improve. Indore Collector Ashish Singh and Divisional Commissioner Deepak Singh held an emergency meeting with officials to reassess traffic management measures.
