A special NIA court on Thursday remanded Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key conspirator in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, to 18-day custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The agency will questioning him at 10 am Friday at its headquarters in New Delhi, an official said.
Rana, 64, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin residing in Chicago, was extradited from the United States and flown to Indira Gandhi International Airport on a special flight from Los Angeles. The aircraft was escorted by teams from the NIA and the National Security Guard (NSG), including senior officials involved in the case.
Upon arrival, Rana was formally arrested after the completion of legal formalities. His extradition follows years of sustained efforts by Indian authorities and cooperation with multiple US agencies, including the Department of Justice&rsquo;s Office of International Affairs, the US Attorney&rsquo;s Office for the Central District of California, the FBI, the US Marshals Service, and the State Department&rsquo;s legal office.
According to the NIA, Rana&rsquo;s extradition is a major step in India&rsquo;s ongoing mission to bring to justice those responsible for the 2008 attacks that killed 166 people and injured over 238.
During his 18-day custody, Rana is expected to be grilled on his ties to co-accused David Coleman Headley, alleged links with Pakistan&rsquo;s ISI, past visits to India, and individuals he met while here.&nbsp;
In its Friday press release, shared on its X (formerly Twitter) handle, the NIA said it would interrogate Rana in detail &ldquo;to unravel the complete conspiracy&rdquo; behind the Mumbai attacks. His extradition was secured after legal battles in American courts, including a rejected emergency appeal to the US Supreme Court.
The Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs played critical roles in coordinating the surrender warrant and facilitating the process.
