At least 24 people were killed and several others injured after a gravel-laden lorry collided head-on with a state-run RTC bus in Telangana&rsquo;s Ranga Reddy district on Monday morning. The tragic incident occurred near Mirzaguda village in Chevella mandal, when the lorry lost control and rammed into the bus before toppling onto it.
The bus, operated by the Tandur depot, was heading to Hyderabad carrying around 70 passengers mostly students and office-goers returning after the weekend. The collision was so powerful that the lorry&rsquo;s gravel load crashed onto the bus, trapping many passengers underneath. Rescue teams and locals rushed to the site to pull out survivors from the mangled remains.
Among the victims were both drivers, several women, and a 10-month-old infant along with its mother. Emergency responders used JCB excavators to clear the debris and rescue those trapped inside. The injured were taken to the Chevella Government Hospital, while critically wounded passengers were referred to hospitals in Hyderabad. Officials warned that the death toll could rise further.
Traffic on the Hyderabad&ndash;Bijapur highway came to a halt for several hours following the crash. Chevella Circle Inspector Bhupal Sridhar sustained a leg injury during rescue operations and was hospitalised.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep sorrow over the incident and ordered top officials to carry out immediate rescue and relief efforts. He instructed the Chief Secretary and the DGP to deploy medical teams, ambulances, and paramedical staff to ensure timely treatment for the injured.
Preliminary investigations point to overspeeding and possible loss of control by the lorry driver as the cause of the accident. Authorities are continuing to probe the incident while relief measures remain in full swing.
