Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir foiled yet another infiltration attempt along the Line of Control, killing two terrorists in the Uri sector of Baramulla on Thursday. The encounter took place days after a similar operation in Gurez, Bandipora, where two infiltrators were also neutralised.
Officials confirmed that troops deployed along the LoC spotted suspicious movement near Naushehra Nard in Gurez earlier this week. The infiltrators were challenged, leading to an exchange of fire in which both were eliminated. A search operation is continuing in the forested area to rule out the presence of more infiltrators.
The back-to-back infiltration bids highlight increased attempts from across the border. On August 25, terrorists tried to sneak into the Torna area of Uri, triggering a brief gunfight after being detected by alert soldiers. Earlier, on August 13, a soldier laid down his life while preventing another infiltration in the same sector.
Security forces have intensified operations across Jammu and Kashmir, not just against armed terrorists but also their overground workers, sympathisers and financers. A senior officer said the focus is now on &ldquo;dismantling the terror ecosystem in its entirety.&rdquo;
The crackdown extends to hawala money channels, drug smuggling and peddling, which investigators believe fund militant groups. Multiple hawala and narco-terror rackets have recently been busted, with their trail traced back to handlers operating from across the border.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha continues to chair periodic security review meetings where emphasis is placed on eliminating not only the gunmen but also the networks that sustain terrorism in the Union Territory.
