In a heart-wrenching incident, a 13-year-old boy named Mithun tragically lost his life after being electrocuted on the rooftop of a state-run school in Thevalakkara, Kollam, Kerala.
The accident occurred on Thursday morning just before classes began. While playing with classmates, Mithun&rsquo;s footwear got stuck on the school rooftop, directly beneath a high-voltage electric line. Attempting to retrieve it, the Class 8 student climbed onto the roof, slipped, and made contact with the live wire.
Despite prompt efforts, he could not be saved.
Kerala Education Minister V. Sivankutty expressed deep sorrow: &ldquo;This is a sad day. We&rsquo;ve lost one of our children.&rdquo; He added that a senior official has been directed to investigate and file a report. Schools are mandated to submit safety fitness certificates annually, and this case will be reviewed for compliance.
Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty also ordered a separate probe by the Chief Electrical Inspector.
While the local Electricity Board claimed no fault&mdash;stating the line existed for 40 years and the shed was added later&mdash;authorities revealed the school had been offered a line shift two days earlier but did not act immediately.
Teachers remain in shock, and accountability is being sought to prevent future tragedies.
