At least 10 Indian Army soldiers were killed and 10 others injured after a military vehicle plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Doda district, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The accident occurred at Khanni Top along the Bhaderwah&ndash;Chamba interstate road when a bulletproof Army vehicle carrying personnel to a high-altitude post reportedly lost control and fell nearly 200 feet into a gorge. The vehicle was carrying 17 soldiers at the time of the incident.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha confirmed the deaths and expressed deep condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. He also said that the injured personnel were immediately airlifted to hospital facilities and assured that the best possible medical care was being provided.
Following the crash, the Army and local police launched a joint rescue operation. Officials said several soldiers were found dead at the scene, while others were pulled out of the wreckage with injuries. Three critically injured soldiers were airlifted to the Udhampur military hospital for specialised treatment.
The incident comes just days after two Army porters died after slipping into a gorge near the Line of Control in the Gulmarg sector. Their bodies were recovered after a multi-day search operation.
Such accidents have been recurrent in the mountainous terrain of Jammu and Kashmir. In May last year, three Army personnel were killed after their vehicle plunged into a 700-foot-deep gorge in Ramban district while travelling as part of a convoy on National Highway 44.
Authorities said an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of the latest accident in Doda. The tragic incident once again highlights the risks faced by armed forces personnel operating in difficult and high-altitude terrains.
