The Khelo India University Games 2025 once again underlined the spirit of inclusivity as Siddi community wrestler Shalina Sayer Siddhi claimed a bronze medal in women&rsquo;s freestyle wrestling on Friday.
Representing Karnatak University, Dharwad, Shalina finished third in the 57kg category at Lohagarh Stadium after defeating Bhanu of Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Haryana, by a narrow 2-1 margin in her final group bout.
For Shalina, the medal is more than a sporting success. It reflects the growing opportunities available to athletes from historically marginalised communities through platforms like Khelo India. The Siddi community, believed to trace its roots to Africa, has been part of India for centuries and is recognised as a Scheduled Tribe in several states.
&ldquo;This is my first Khelo India University Games, and I came here with a lot of belief,&rdquo; Shalina said. &ldquo;I was confident of winning a medal, even if I didn&rsquo;t know which one. I am extremely happy with this result.&rdquo;
Her journey to the podium tested her resolve, both physically and mentally. The Karnatak University contingent spent nearly three days travelling by train to reach Rajasthan. &ldquo;The journey was exhausting,&rdquo; she admitted. &ldquo;But once you win, all the hardship feels worth it.&rdquo; Shalina has been training in wrestling for nearly ten years.
Addressing the broader social context, Shalina said she has largely been spared the discrimination often faced by people judged on the basis of skin colour. &ldquo;I grew up with local children in Dharwad and have been respected because of my achievements in sports,&rdquo; she said, adding that her sister serves as a police officer in Bengaluru.
She also cited Pro Kabaddi League star Sushil Motesh Kambrekar of the Bengal Warriors as an inspiration for the Siddi community. &ldquo;He motivates so many of us. I hope to make a name in sports like him and make my community proud,&rdquo; she said.
Already a bronze medallist at the All-India University level earlier this year, Shalina&rsquo;s latest achievement strengthens Khelo India&rsquo;s message of empowerment through sport.
