Gujarat's seasoned top-order batter Priyank Panchal has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, concluding a prolific domestic career that spanned nearly twenty years. The 34-year-old made the announcement on Monday through a heartfelt message shared via social media, where he reflected on his journey and expressed gratitude to his family, fans, and colleagues.
Panchal represented Gujarat in 127 first-class matches, compiling 8,856 runs across 207 innings at an average of 45.18. His red-ball tally included 29 centuries and 34 half-centuries, alongside 98 catches.&nbsp;
In the limited-overs formats, he played 97 List A matches, scoring 3,672 runs at 40.80 with eight hundreds. In T20 cricket, he accumulated 1,522 runs from 59 appearances.
Despite being included in India&rsquo;s Test squad on two occasions, Panchal never featured in the final playing XI. He was called up in December 2021 for the South Africa tour, replacing Rohit Sharma, who was ruled out due to a hamstring injury.&nbsp;
He was also named in the squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka in February 2022. He captained India A regularly and played a pivotal role in mentoring emerging players. Panchal, like former Gujarat captain Mukund Parmar, amassed significant domestic runs but was unable to secure a place in the Indian Test team.
His most outstanding season came during the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy, where he amassed 1,310 runs, including an unbeaten 314 &mdash; the first triple century by a Gujarat batter in the competition. That season ended with Gujarat claiming their maiden Ranji Trophy title. Panchal also contributed to Gujarat&rsquo;s victories in the 2015&ndash;16 Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2012&ndash;13 and 2013&ndash;14, cementing his reputation as a dependable presence at the top of the order.
In his retirement note, Panchal conveyed appreciation for his supporters: &ldquo;It&rsquo;s an emotional moment. It&rsquo;s an enriching moment. And it&rsquo;s a moment which fills me with a lot of gratitude. To, most importantly, my fans. I always read all the messages coming my way from your end. Many of you talk fondly about wanting to see me in India colours. It&rsquo;s with this steadfast motivation that I continued my journey till now.&rdquo;
He also shared a personal tribute to his late father, whose encouragement he described as foundational: &ldquo;I was no different. My dad was a long-lasting source of strength for me. I was moved by the energy that he gave me, the way he encouraged me to pursue my dreams, to rise from a relatively small city and dare to aspire to wear the India cap one day. He left us long ago, and it was a dream I carried with me for nearly two decades, season after season, until today.&rdquo;
Acknowledging his close family, Panchal expressed his appreciation for their support throughout his career: &ldquo;To, my mom, and my sister. The two of them have been staunchly standing beside me, propelling me to become the best version of myself. They saw the glitter in my eyes when I sweated it out in the scorching summers of Ahmedabad, rushing from one ground to another to play competitive games, ever since I was a teenager. As I progressed through the ranks, they lifted me up when I felt like I was sinking. They gave me the buoyancy to fly when I did well. They kept me grounded, but never let the confidence in me recede at any given point in time. I could not have done this without you two.&rdquo;
He also paid tribute to his wife and her family, now his own: &ldquo;To, my wife, and her family, which is my family now. I found companionship, love, and a partner for life. Someone who understood me &ndash; my strengths, weaknesses, joys, fears, dreams, everything above and beyond.&rdquo;
Panchal has been employed with the Ahmedabad Income Tax Department since 2014, having joined through the sports quota as a meritorious recruit. His progression in both cricket and service has often been cited as an inspiration for athletes entering government roles through sporting achievements.&nbsp;
Satish Sharma, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax in Gujarat, commended Panchal&rsquo;s contributions: &ldquo;He has been a special cricketer. He greatly helped Gujarat team becoming force to reckon with at national level. Deserved to have played in Indian test team. Convey my best wishes to him.&rdquo;
In his message to the department, he wrote: &ldquo;Thank you so much, sir, for your kind wishes and unwavering support throughout my journey. I am truly grateful to our department for the consistent guidance and encouragement in every aspect along the way.&rdquo;
Anil Patel, secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association, also acknowledged his service to the state side: &ldquo;Priyank has donned the national colours for India A as captain and was a prolific run-scorer for Gujarat for more than 17 years.&rdquo;
Signing off on his note, Panchal reflected on the future with optimism: &ldquo;But, the book is not wrapped up. Anyone who knows me, knows how much of a bibliophile I am. No matter how exciting a chapter of a book is, the next one always promises to be better. I hope my book follows the same.&rdquo;
