Japan&rsquo;s Yosuke Asaji scripted history at the Moutai Singapore Open, becoming the first Japanese golfer in nearly five decades to lift the trophy after edging Korea&rsquo;s Jeunghun Wang in a sudden-death playoff at the Singapore Island Country Club.
Asaji sealed victory with a birdie on the par-five 18th, while Wang faltered by finding the water on his approach shot and carded a six. Thailand&rsquo;s Rattanon Wannasrichan and Korea&rsquo;s Soomin Lee shared third place, finishing just one stroke behind in the USD 2 million Asian Tour event.
Indian golfer Ajeetesh Sandhu wrapped up his campaign in tied-37th position at 9-under 279 after a steady two-under 70 in the final round.
Asaji&rsquo;s win was built on consistency and composure highlighted by five consecutive birdies early in the round and a clutch par save on the 15th. His five-under-par 67 brought him to 19-under overall, forcing a playoff with Wang, who matched him after a dramatic final-hole birdie.
The victory marks Asaji&rsquo;s first overseas triumph and moves him to fifth on the Asian Tour Order of Merit and second on The International Series Rankings. &ldquo;This means so much to me, my first win abroad is a dream come true,&rdquo; said an emotional Asaji.
With the Singapore Open being the penultimate event of the Asian Tour season, the focus now shifts to the USD 5 million PIF Saudi International in Riyadh, the most lucrative tournament on the circuit
