The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Wednesday held a Special General Meeting (SGM) in New Delhi, where it formally approved India&rsquo;s plan to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar have emerged as the leading contenders to be the proposed host city, with the final decision expected in November. India will now submit its official proposal to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) before the August 31 deadline.
The 2030 edition will hold special significance for India as it will mark two decades since the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games, the country&rsquo;s only hosting of the event so far. While the 2010 Games were marred by corruption scandals, the IOA and central government are keen to use 2030 as a chance to showcase India&rsquo;s improved infrastructure and organisational capabilities.
India began informal discussions with the CGF earlier this year about hosting the centenary edition of the Games. Senior CGF officials, including president Chris Jenkins and CEO Katie Sadlier, have visited multiple Indian cities such as Gandhinagar, Bhubaneswar, and New Delhi to meet ministers and bureaucrats. They also inspected potential venues in Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar. Recently, a CGF delegation led by Director of Games Darren Hall toured Ahmedabad to assess its readiness.
The final decision on the 2030 host city will be taken during the CGF General Assembly in Glasgow in the last week of November. If successful, India could further strengthen its case to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, Gujarat is pushing hard to become a hub for major international sporting events. Apart from the Commonwealth Games, the state is eyeing the 2027 Women&rsquo;s Volleyball World Championship, 2028 Asian Swimming Championship, 2028 World U20 Athletics Championships, the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, the South Asian Games, World Beach Games, and World Military Games. These events would help Gujarat gain valuable hosting experience ahead of any potential Olympic bid.
