Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, along with leaders from Assam, Tripura, and Nagaland, announced the formation of a new political party aimed at protecting the &ldquo;rights of indigenous people.&rdquo; 
The new entity, yet to be named, seeks to unify regional voices and advocate for the concerns of the northeastern states.
The announcement was made in New Delhi by National People&rsquo;s Party (NPP) chief and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, TIPRA Motha leader Pradyot Manikya, former BJP spokesperson Mmhonlumo Kikon, and Daniel Langthasa from the People&rsquo;s Party, Assam.
Sangma said a joint committee has been established to draft the party&rsquo;s constitution, symbol, and structure. 
&ldquo;The joint committee will furnish details of the new outfit and the modalities will be announced in the next 45 days. We are not here to fight with anyone, we are trying to create a platform for what the Northeast today needs&hellip;The interest of our people is driving us,&rdquo; he said.
The leaders clarified that their existing parties would eventually merge to form a single political entity. 
&ldquo;Our parties are going to merge and become one political entity at the right time,&rdquo; Sangma added.
Responding to questions about alliances, Sangma said the new party would contest elections independently, serving as &ldquo;a voice for the people of the Northeast.&rdquo; 
The committee will reach out to &ldquo;likeminded people, leaders and other political parties&rdquo; to join their cause.
Emphasizing the party&rsquo;s core agenda, Sangma said the protection of land rights of indigenous communities will remain a top priority.
TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Manikya said the regional unity was long overdue. 
&ldquo;We want to speak for our people with conviction and truth. We may have different points of view but we are not in a civil war,&rdquo; he said, adding that the party would also address constitutional violations and stand up &ldquo;for the voiceless people&rdquo; regardless of religion or ethnicity.
Manikya stressed the need for &ldquo;articulation and cohesiveness&rdquo; in addressing the region&rsquo;s issues. 
&ldquo;Our ideology is "people first" and we believe our core strength lies in speaking as one,&rdquo; he said.
The leaders, in a joint statement, said the new party represents a &ldquo;united singular political entity that truly represents the aspirations of our people.&rdquo; 
The statement added, &ldquo;We have realised that our strength lies in unity, and that it is time to give our people one collective voice.&rdquo;
The formation marks a significant step toward building a unified political front for the northeastern region, addressing key concerns such as illegal immigration, cultural preservation, and land rights.
