The couple was sent to judicial custody on Tuesday after a court denied them interim bail on medical grounds following seven days in police custody.</span></p>
<p data-start="391" data-end="557"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">After the bail plea was rejected, the court ordered that the couple be remanded to judicial custody, and they are now set to be lodged at the Central Jail in Udaipur.</span></p>
<h3 data-start="559" data-end="591"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Arrest and case background</span></h3>
<p data-start="592" data-end="878"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Bhatt and his wife were arrested in Mumbai on December 7 and brought to Udaipur the following night by the Rajasthan Police. They were produced before an Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate on December 9, which granted the police a seven-day custodial remand for further investigation.</span></p>
<p data-start="880" data-end="1068"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">The case centres on allegations that Bhatt, his wife and six other accused defrauded Udaipur-based doctor Ajay Murdia, founder of the Indira Group of Companies, of approximately ₹30 crore.</span></p>
<h3 data-start="1070" data-end="1114"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Alleged biopic deal and financial loss</span></h3>
<p data-start="1115" data-end="1471"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">According to the complaint, the doctor was introduced to the accused earlier this year with a proposal to produce a biopic on his late wife. He was allegedly promised returns of up to ₹200 crore from the project. Trusting the proposal, the doctor entered into an agreement in May 2024 worth ₹47 crore for the production of four films, including the biopic.</span></p>
<p data-start="1473" data-end="1601"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Investigators said that while two films were reportedly made under the agreement, the remaining two projects never materialised.</span></p>
<h3 data-start="1603" data-end="1642"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Fake bills and siphoning of funds</span></h3>
<p data-start="1643" data-end="2031"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Police investigations have revealed that the accused allegedly prepared fake documents to siphon off funds from the doctor. These included fabricated bills issued in the names of non-existent vendors, inflated salary vouchers and other forged financial records. Through these means, the accused are believed to have diverted nearly ₹30 crore from the total amount paid by the complainant.</span></p>
<p data-start="2033" data-end="2274"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">After the promised projects failed to take shape and the alleged financial irregularities came to light, the doctor approached the Bhopalpura police station in Udaipur, leading to the registration of an FIR for cheating and related offences.</span></p>
<p data-start="2276" data-end="2418" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node=""><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining financial transactions, documents and the roles of all individuals named in the case.</span></p>
