Police have launched a murder investigation after the partially burnt body of a missing 20-year-old student was discovered in Chitradurga, Karnataka, on Tuesday.
The victim has been identified as Varshitha, a second-year BA student at Government Women's First Grade College who resided at the SC/ST hostel.

According to Chitradurga Rural Police, Varshitha submitted a leave application at her hostel on 14 August before disappearing. Her mobile phone was switched off, making her untraceable.
Her parents, Tippeswamy and Jyothi, were preparing to file a missing person report when authorities contacted them about the body's discovery. They were subsequently called to the district hospital for identification purposes.
Investigating officers are examining the possibility that the student was sexually assaulted before being murdered. The victim's family has informed police that she was in a relationship with a man who may be connected to the crime.
A murder case has been registered at Chitradurga Rural Police Station, with authorities launching an intensive manhunt for the suspect.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Dinakar and Police Inspector Muddu Raj visited the hospital as part of the ongoing investigation. Officers are awaiting the post-mortem examination results to determine the exact cause of death.
The case has shocked the local community, with authorities treating it as a priority investigation.
