Police in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district have apprehended six youths following a shocking incident involving the gang-rape of a minor girl and the unlawful filming of her friend in a naked state. The arrests were made on Tuesday night, five days after the crime occurred in the Narendrapur area of the district.
The case was registered at the Narendrapur police station based on a complaint detailing the events of November 20. Two Class 8 girl students were approached by two known young men on a bike while the girls were at a roadside snack shop near their residence. The young men lured the girls onto the bike under the pretext of taking them for a ride.
After driving around, the two minors were taken to a local garage and subsequently to a friend's vacant house. The son of the landlord and another young man soon joined them. When the girls attempted to leave, they were detained with excuses to "chat for a while." A total of six young men eventually gathered at the house.
The minor girl was then sexually assaulted under threat. According to the victim's account, four youths gang-raped her, while the other two molested her friend. Her friend was spared from the rape as she was menstruating, but the perpetrators forcibly stripped her and videotaped her naked.
The students returned home late on November 20. The family of one of the victims filed a police complaint the following day. Police initiated a search for the accused, resulting in the successful apprehension of the six individuals on Tuesday night after initial suspects were found, questioned, and led police to the others.
A senior officer from the Baruipur police district confirmed that six persons have been arrested on charges of gang-raping a minor and illegally videotaping another girl. The police plan to present the accused before a local court in Baruipur and will request custody to facilitate the ongoing investigation.
