The sexual assault case against suspended Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil has intensified after the complainant&rsquo;s confidential statement revealed serious allegations. The young woman stated that she was sexually exploited under the pretext of marriage and later pressured to undergo an abortion using pills reportedly sent through one of his associates. She allegedly consumed the pills after being threatened over a video call, which led to severe health issues and treatment at a government hospital.
Following the registration of the FIR at Valiyamala Police Station, Mamkootathil is believed to have gone into hiding, and investigators suspect he may have left Kerala. His phone, which remained switched off after the complaint was filed, briefly became active while search operations were underway in Palakkad and Pathanamthitta. Police are also questioning a businessman from Adoor who is suspected of supplying the abortion pills.
The case has now been transferred to Nemom Police Station, as the alleged incidents fall under its jurisdiction. Charges include sexual exploitation under the promise of marriage and forced abortion. The Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner is overseeing the investigation.
Mamkootathil has reportedly started legal steps to seek anticipatory bail and has consulted a lawyer in Kochi. Authorities will move the Neyyattinkara Court to record the complainant&rsquo;s statement under Section 164 CrPC, a key procedural step in the case.
Political reactions have also surfaced, with senior Congress leaders confirming that the party had suspended him earlier when similar allegations emerged. Meanwhile, former IPS officer and BJP leader R. Sreelekha expressed strong support for the survivor and questioned delays in filing the complaint.
