A local newspaper journalist was left seriously injured after being brutally assaulted in Bangladesh's Kushtia district on Monday, according to local media reports.
The attack took place in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia, where Firoz Ahmed, a correspondent for the daily Daink Ajker Sutropat and joint general secretary of the Upazila Press Club, was beaten with hammers, rods, and bricks.
This marks the fourth assault on a journalist reported in August, amid rising violence against media workers in the country.
Mirpur Police Station&rsquo;s Officer-in-Charge, Mominul Islam, confirmed the incident, stating that while no formal complaint has been received yet, authorities are working to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Locals and the victim&rsquo;s family said tensions began days earlier after a quarrel between the children of Firoz and the prime accused, Milon, led to an altercation between their families.
Early Monday morning, Milon, accompanied by four to five others, allegedly ambushed Firoz on his way to the mosque. He was first taken to the Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Kushtia General Hospital. Resident Medical Officer Hossain Imam reported that Firoz suffered serious head and leg injuries.
The incident follows a string of violent attacks on journalists across Bangladesh. Just a day earlier, another journalist, Helal Hossain Kabir, and his mother were assaulted in Lalmonirhat district. Helal, the executive editor of the weekly Alormoni, and his mother are both under medical supervision at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.
On August 7, a reporter in Gazipur was hacked to death in public hours after livestreaming allegations of extortion targeting local street vendors and shops. The video of the killing went viral, triggering outrage in the media fraternity.
A day earlier, on August 6, journalist Anwar Hossain Sourav was attacked in Gazipur&rsquo;s Sahapara area while investigating extortion from auto-rickshaw drivers. He was assaulted in broad daylight, reportedly in front of police officers.
Bangladesh has witnessed a surge in violent attacks on journalists and other citizens since the Yunus-led interim government took office last year.
Last month, the Awami League reported that 51 journalists had voiced deep concern over the ongoing killings, torture, and harassment of media workers. They have called for an end to the attacks, justice for slain colleagues, bail for imprisoned journalists, and the restoration of Dhaka Union of Journalists&rsquo; operations.&nbsp;
