A 19-year-old college student died during treatment on December 26 after allegedly facing ragging by senior students and sexual harassment by a college professor in Himachal Pradesh&rsquo;s Dharamshala. The case has drawn nationwide attention after a video, reportedly recorded in a hospital, surfaced on social media in which the student described the trauma she said she endured at her college.
Police confirmed that a case has been registered following a complaint filed by the student&rsquo;s father. He alleged that his daughter was physically assaulted by three senior students and subjected to repeated mental and sexual harassment by a professor. The student&rsquo;s health reportedly deteriorated after the alleged incidents, leading to her death during treatment in Ludhiana.
In the video, the student is seen narrating instances of alleged inappropriate behaviour, intimidation and harassment by the professor. She also spoke about being repeatedly troubled and touched against her will. The video is now part of the investigation, along with medical records and statements of those involved.
Authorities said the case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institution (Prohibition of) Ragging Act, 2009. Police officials stated that all allegations are being thoroughly examined and that the investigation is ongoing.
The accused professor has denied the allegations, claiming that the student was not enrolled under him in the current academic session. Some faculty members have reportedly expressed support for the professor.
Preliminary findings indicate that the student was admitted to the college in 2024 and allegedly faced ragging during her first year. She failed her BA first-year examination and stopped attending college after the results were declared. Her name was later removed from the college rolls. She reportedly visited the institution again, seeking re-admission, but was informed that she would need to clear re-evaluation or re-enrol in the first year.
Taking note of the incident, the University Grants Commission has announced the formation of a fact-finding committee. The UGC stated that student safety remains a top priority and assured strict action against those found responsible.
