A 25-year-old man allegedly murdered his mother, sister and younger brother at their residence in east Delhi&rsquo;s Laxmi Nagar, police said on Monday. The accused reportedly surrendered at the local police station and cited severe financial stress and prolonged unemployment as the reason behind the crime.
The accused, identified as Yashveer Singh, works as a cab driver. According to investigators, he walked into the Laxmi Nagar police station around 5 pm and confessed to killing his family members. He allegedly told police that he fed them sweets mixed with a sedative before strangling them to death. Police, however, said the exact substance used has not yet been confirmed, as the accused has changed his statements multiple times during questioning.
Police teams rushed to the address provided by Singh and found the bodies of his mother, 46-year-old Kavita Singh, his 23-year-old sister Meghana, and his 14-year-old brother Mukul inside a rented three-bedroom flat where the family had been living for the past two years.
Investigators said the accused had been under financial pressure for several months and was unable to pay the monthly rent of ₹20,000. His father, a truck driver, does not reside with the family and visits occasionally due to work commitments. Police also said Singh&rsquo;s wife had reportedly left him a day earlier following a dispute related to his gambling habits and alleged substance abuse.
According to the latest version of events shared with investigators, Singh allegedly administered the sedative-laced sweets to his family between 2 pm and 3 pm. After they lost consciousness, he allegedly strangled all three using a muffler.
Forensic Science Laboratory teams collected samples from the flat, and post-mortem examinations have been ordered to determine the exact cause of death and confirm whether poison or sedatives were used.
Neighbours described the family as quiet, religious and withdrawn. Police said the accused has been arrested and is being interrogated, while his wife and father have been asked to cooperate with the investigation.
