Humayun Kabir, a professional engineer, who was arrested in Bangaon, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal for stabbing four individuals inside a madrasa, is now also suspected of murdering his own parents just a day prior, according to police sources.
The stabbing incident occurred on Wednesday evening when Kabir allegedly entered the madrasa and attacked four people. However, further investigation has revealed that he had already committed a double homicide the previous night in Memari, located in East Burdwan district. His parents' bodies were discovered Wednesday morning.
Following the murders in Memari, Kabir fled the area and travelled nearly 110 kilometers to Bangaon, where he carried out the second attack. Authorities from Memari have coordinated with Bangaon police and dispatched a team to assist with the investigation.
Despite initial claims by Bangaon police that Kabir is mentally unstable and that there is no communal motive behind the attack, questions have been raised about the intent behind his journey and choice of target. Investigators are also examining why such a large crowd gathered so quickly outside the Bangaon Police Station following his arrest, with some locals speculating that Kabir may have had contacts in the area.
After Kabir&rsquo;s arrest, tensions escalated as a mob attempted to storm the police station, reportedly trying to seize the accused from custody. The crowd also attempted to vandalize the police station&rsquo;s reception area. Officers quickly intervened, dispersing the mob and arresting ten individuals involved in the disturbance. Additional operations are underway to apprehend others linked to the incident.
Bangaon Police District Superintendent Dinesh Kumar confirmed the stabbing incident, the subsequent attack on the police station, and the steps being taken to restore order. In an official statement, he described the accused as mentally unstable and reiterated that there was no communal element to the incident. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to spread false narratives or incite unrest.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind Kabir&rsquo;s actions, while assuring the public that law and order are under control.
