&nbsp;A journalist and his mother were brutally assaulted in Bangladesh&rsquo;s Lalmonirhat district, highlighting growing violence against media workers in the country.
The victim, 32-year-old Helal Hossain Kabir, executive editor of weekly Alormoni, was attacked at his home by a group of assailants on Saturday night. His mother was injured while trying to shield him. Both are under treatment at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.
Police have arrested the prime accused, Sohrab Hossain, and named 11 people in a case. Kabir alleges the attack stemmed from his suspected role in exposing a local gambling racket months earlier. He said the attackers used bamboo sticks and iron rods, causing injuries to his head, face, hands, and legs.
The incident follows a string of violent attacks on journalists in recent weeks. On August 7, Gazipur reporter Asaduzzaman Tuhin was hacked to death hours after livestreaming an expos&eacute; on extortion. A day earlier, journalist Anwar Hossain Sourav was assaulted in broad daylight while probing similar allegations.
Media bodies and journalists have condemned the assaults, calling for justice, the release of jailed reporters, and an end to harassment. The Awami League recently said 51 journalists have expressed alarm over escalating violence under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government.
