Bangladesh&rsquo;s International Crimes Tribunal on Monday declared former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two of her senior aides guilty of crimes against humanity linked to the July 2024 protests that shook the country.
The tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, delivered the judgment during a live broadcast on Bangladesh Television. Sentencing is still underway.
The co-accused include former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and ex-Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. While Hasina has refused to return to Bangladesh to face the charges, Asaduzzaman remains on the run. Mamun, currently in custody, has pleaded guilty and turned state witness the first in the tribunal&rsquo;s history since its formation in 2010.
According to The Dhaka Tribune, the prosecution submitted an extensive 8,747-page charge document with witness statements, seized materials, and a detailed list of victims. Prosecutors framed five counts, including failure to prevent murder, a charge that falls under crimes against humanity in Bangladeshi law. They have sought the death penalty for all three if the tribunal upholds the charges, along with confiscation of their assets for compensation to victims&rsquo; families.
Hasina has consistently denied all allegations.
Meanwhile, Dhaka has been placed under a sweeping security lockdown. On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali issued a shoot-at-sight order against those involved in arson, crude bomb attacks or attempts to harm civilians and law enforcement ahead of the verdict.
The Awami League&rsquo;s 48-hour strike on November 16&ndash;17 has also coincided with a spike in arson cases and cocktail blasts across the capital. In Narayanganj alone, police have detained at least 21 Awami League leaders and workers many of whom are currently barred from political activities during special operations over the last 36 hours, The Daily Star reported.
