The government has proposed making it compulsory for e-commerce platforms to include a searchable and sortable &lsquo;Country of Origin&rsquo; filter for all packaged commodities sold online.
According to the Consumer Affairs Ministry, this initiative aims to boost transparency, empower consumers, and strengthen trust in digital marketplaces. The proposed rule part of the Draft Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) (Second) Amendment Rules, 2025 seeks to ensure that buyers can easily identify where a product comes from before making a purchase.
The draft amendment has been published for public consultation, and stakeholders can share their feedback until November 22.
The ministry said the change would help consumers make informed choices by allowing them to quickly locate products made in India or elsewhere. This move supports the government&rsquo;s &lsquo;Atmanirbhar Bharat&rsquo; and &lsquo;Vocal for Local&rsquo; initiatives by increasing visibility for domestic goods and creating a level playing field for Indian manufacturers.
The ministry added that the new feature will also simplify compliance checks, helping authorities verify product details and detect violations more efficiently.
