A tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening near Kukma village on the outskirts of Bhuj, where a 20-year-old farm labourer from Jharkhand fell into an abandoned borewell. The young man, identified as Rustam Sheikh, slipped into the 150-foot-deep borewell located inside the farm of a local farmer near Aashapura Tekri. The borewell opening stood about three feet above ground level.
According to preliminary details and information shared by Bhuj Prant Officer Anil Yadav, the youth may have jumped into the borewell following a family dispute at home. However, officials said the exact cause, whether it was an accident or an attempted suicide, will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report.
The incident was reported around 6:15 pm, triggering an immediate response from the district administration. Police teams, revenue officers, the 108 emergency medical crew, and the Bhuj Fire Department reached the spot with advanced rescue equipment. Oxygen was continuously supplied into the borewell to keep the youth alive while rescue work was underway.
To speed up the operation, assistance from the Indian Army was also sought. Large numbers of local villagers and labourers gathered at the spot as rescue efforts continued through the late night.
Despite continuous efforts that lasted until around 3:30 am, the rescue teams were unable to save him. His body was eventually pulled out of the borewell, bringing deep grief to the entire Kukma village and the Bhuj region. Police officials sent the body for a post-mortem and initiated further legal procedures.
