The Gujarat government has officially granted a six-month extension to Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1989 batch, who was originally scheduled to retire on June 30, 2025. The decision allows him to continue serving as the state&rsquo;s top police official until the end of this year.
Throughout the day, speculation had been rife regarding the possibility of an extension for Sahay. Similar extensions have been granted to previous DGPs in Gujarat, and this development temporarily ends conjecture surrounding his successor.&nbsp;
On what was supposed to be his final day in office, Vikas Sahay reported to work as usual. Preparations for a farewell ceremony had been made at the Police Bhavan, including a stage set for his final address, a decorated police jeep, a guard of honour, and the police band. However, the farewell was put on hold due to the absence of any official communication from the government.
As hours passed without confirmation, the atmosphere grew increasingly uncertain. Rumours began circulating by afternoon, suggesting a possible three-month extension. These persisted until around 7 pm, by which time his scheduled retirement at 6:10 pm had already passed. With no clarity from the authorities, the farewell ceremony was eventually cancelled.
Officers and staff, initially assembled for the event, gradually dispersed. Vikas Sahay also left the premises shortly after, stating simply, &ldquo;Waiting for the order.&rdquo;
