A fresh protest erupted on Monday at the Vidya Samiksha Kendra in Gandhinagar as candidates who cleared the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) and Teacher Aptitude Test (TAT) demanded swift action on pending teacher recruitments.
For over a decade, these candidates have sought permanent teaching positions. While the first phase of recruitment, held between June 27 and July 27 this year, filled a portion of the 10,700 advertised posts, over 3,500 vacancies remain unfilled. Protesters are now urging the government to initiate a second phase based on merit and complete the process without further delay.
The protest comes after earlier demonstrations on February 24, where hundreds of TET-TAT passouts gathered at Satyagrah Chhavni. Many were detained near the Civil Hospital before reaching the protest site, leading to clashes and over 250 arrests.
Candidates expressed frustration over the sluggish recruitment process, which has seen little movement in the past two years. Despite repeated representations to the Education Department and the Minister, they claim no effective steps have been taken.
They also cited recruitment exams held in 2023 including the Vidya Sahayak exam in April and the TAT (Secondary and Higher Secondary) exams in June and September saying that appointments for 24,700 posts remain pending. Candidates are now demanding that these vacancies be included in the current recruitment cycle and that a fixed timeline be announced.
Protesters highlighted that repeated delays have imposed emotional, financial, and age-related stress, with some now approaching the upper limit of eligibility. They are calling for a structured and continuous recruitment calendar to avoid repeated exam attempts by the same individuals and to accommodate new candidates.
Adding to their discontent was the January 16 announcement by Education Minister Praful Pansheriya, who had promised that appointments would be completed within a month. More than 40 days later, candidates say there has been no visible progress, questioning the credibility of such public commitments.
One protester stated, &ldquo;Not receiving justice in time is itself injustice. We've submitted applications repeatedly, but there's no time-bound decision from the government.&rdquo;
A senior government source confirmed that discussions are ongoing regarding the next phase of recruitment, but added that the process must ensure transparency and administrative readiness.
