Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA), operated by Ahmedabad International Airport Limited (AIAL), has commissioned two new Code C parallel taxiways, Taxiway Romeo (R) and Romeo 1 (R1), marking a significant development in airport infrastructure.
The addition of Taxiways R and R1 is expected to improve runway efficiency, reduce airfield congestion, and enhance operational safety. Designed in compliance with DGCA and ICAO standards, the taxiways strengthen SVPIA&rsquo;s goal of establishing itself as a world-class airport ready to meet rising passenger and airline demand.

Taxiway R: Spanning 1,126 meters, it accommodates all Code C aircraft, including A320S, B737S, and business jets. It connects the existing Code E taxiway to Parallel Taxiway P, allowing faster runway entry and exit and reducing backtracking.

Taxiway R1: Provides direct access from Taxiway R to Runway 05/23, optimising aircraft flow during peak operations.

Runway Capacity: The Current runway capacity of 20 air traffic movements (ATM) per hour is set to increase to 28 ATMs per hour with the new taxiways.

Both taxiways are equipped with modern lighting systems and upgraded safety signage and have cleared rigorous engineering and safety audits. Officials highlighted benefits such as improved on-time performance, reduced taxi waiting times, lower carbon emissions, and faster aircraft turnaround, supporting both airlines and passengers.
From April to October 2025, SVPIA handled over 7.8 million passengers, a 7% increase from the previous year. The commissioning of Taxiways R and R1 is a step toward strengthening Ahmedabad Airport&rsquo;s position as a key regional aviation hub and enhancing its operational efficiency and sustainability.
