In a major crackdown on corporate land encroachment, the Surat District Authority has imposed an ₹18 crore fine on Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India (AMNSI) for illegally occupying government land. This move underscores the contrast between the state&rsquo;s response to industrial encroachments and its high-profile actions in Bet-Dwarka.
An investigation by the district collector&rsquo;s office revealed that AMNSI had encroached upon 80,000 square meters of government land over multiple years. Land records confirmed several violations, with 18 cases filed against the company in the revenue department. Of these, numerous instances of illegal occupation were substantiated.
Deputy Collector Nirav Paritosh stated that the fine was determined after a two-month verification process, meticulously comparing physical site conditions with official land records. The district authority is also probing eight additional encroachment cases against AMNSI, which could lead to further financial penalties.
AMNSI now faces a critical decision&mdash;either pay the hefty fine or challenge the collector&rsquo;s ruling in court. Legal analysts highlight that if the company fails to respond within the stipulated timeframe, authorities can seize its assets to recover the dues.
