A heated exchange between a doctor and a patient&rsquo;s family inside Ahmedabad&rsquo;s Sola Civil Hospital has triggered an official investigation after a video of the confrontation went viral on social media.
The incident took place around 9 pm on Sunday when a man named Ajay Chavda brought his young niece to the hospital&rsquo;s paediatric ward. The child, who had been suffering from fever and breathing difficulties for two days, was reportedly left unattended for some time before a resident doctor arrived.
According to Chavda, the doctor objected to the way a thermometer had been placed over the child&rsquo;s T-shirt. When the family explained that a hospital staff member had positioned it, the doctor allegedly raised her voice and said, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s your daughter; don&rsquo;t you know where to place it?&rdquo; Chavda claimed that when he requested her to speak politely, she snapped, &ldquo;This is how my voice is.&rdquo;
He further alleged that the doctor became aggressive when he began recording the exchange on his phone. &ldquo;She hit my hand and struck my brother in the stomach before refusing to treat the child,&rdquo; Chavda told reporters. He added that the doctor allegedly said, &ldquo;You misbehaved with me, so I won&rsquo;t treat you. Go wherever you want&mdash;even to the Chief Minister.&rdquo;
The child was later treated after the Chief Medical Officer intervened, but the family alleged that they were asked to delete the video to avoid further controversy.
Following the public outrage, Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya directed the Health Secretary to conduct an immediate and impartial inquiry. &ldquo;Strict disciplinary action will be taken against any medical officer or staff member found guilty of misconduct,&rdquo; the minister said.
Speaking to Benefit News, Dr. Deepika Singhal, Medical Superintendent of Sola Civil Hospital, confirmed that a three-member committee headed by her has been constituted to probe the matter. &ldquo;We are taking this incident very seriously and will review CCTV footage to establish the truth. The doctor claims she was harassed first and reacted under pressure. She has been shifted to the research wing pending inquiry,&rdquo; Dr. Singhal said.
She further revealed that the doctor in question has a history of psychiatric issues and may have been triggered during the exchange. &ldquo;She is not in touch with the patient&rsquo;s family at present,&rdquo; the superintendent added.
Authorities have assured that the probe will be transparent, and accountability will be fixed once the committee submits its findings.
