Heavy rainfall across North Gujarat and Rajasthan has sharply increased inflow into Dharoi Dam on the Sabarmati River, pushing storage close to full capacity. On Tuesday, 52,358 cusecs of water were released downstream, triggering a White Signal at Subhash Bridge in Ahmedabad as the surge is expected to arrive shortly.
Sant Sarovar in Gandhinagar has also reached maximum storage, resulting in the opening of all 21 gates over the past three days. Currently, 87,343 cusecs are being discharged toward Dholeshwar, Bhat, and the Ahmedabad Riverfront, submerging walkways and low-lying stretches.
Officials confirmed that release may increase further as inflow continues. A senior officer said, &ldquo;The river is flowing strongly on both banks, and people in nearby areas must remain cautious.&rdquo;
At Vasna Barrage in Ahmedabad, 27 gates, from numbers 3 to 29, have been opened, allowing 35,326 cusecs to flow downstream. Discharges will be gradually increased as water levels rise. Authorities reported that the barrage has crossed the warning mark, and the situation is being closely monitored. The in-charge executive engineer of AMC&rsquo;s Flood Control Cell stated,&nbsp;&ldquo;All systems are on standby. Residents in flood-prone zones should take safety measures immediately.&rdquo;
The Ahmedabad Mamlatdar (Disaster) has directed departments to alert riverbank villages and initiate emergency protocols. &ldquo;Every concerned agency has been instructed to act swiftly to safeguard people in vulnerable areas,&rdquo; the notice said.
In view of the strong current, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited has closed the lower promenade to the public until further orders.
With continuous inflow from upstream catchments and phased discharges from Dharoi and Sant Sarovar, officials have warned that water levels in Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad will remain high in the coming days.
