The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation has drafted a new policy making pet dog registration compulsory, on the lines of Ahmedabad. The proposal, set to go before the standing committee soon, fixes the registration fee at ₹200 and allows only adults above 18 to take dogs outside.
The move comes nearly a year after a fatal dog attack in Ahmedabad. With many housing societies in Gandhinagar having pet dogs, the policy aims to prevent such incidents and promote responsible ownership.
Dog owners will need to submit a registration form with photographs, Aadhaar, tax bill, proof of residence, and a rabies vaccination certificate. A change in ownership will require fresh registration.
Aggressive or noisy dogs must wear a muzzle when outside, and owners must prevent them from mating with strays. A ₹500 fine will be imposed if a pet defecates in public, while biting incidents could lead to legal action and cancellation of registration.
Officials said the rules are designed to ensure safety, hygiene, and accountability while encouraging responsible pet care in the city.
