Gujarat is witnessing rising political tensions as Congress MLA and GPCC working president Jignesh Mevani renewed his attack on the state government, accusing it of turning a blind eye to widespread illegal activities, including liquor dens, drug trafficking, gambling operations, and prostitution networks across the state.
Mevani demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi and questioned Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel&rsquo;s silence on these issues. Speaking at a press conference in Ahmedabad, he alleged that all 33 districts and over 250 talukas were affected, describing the situation as one where &ldquo;law and the Constitution appear to be in tatters.&rdquo;
He accused the state administration and police of enabling the expansion of these illicit trades over the past five years. &ldquo;Who orders this, and who supplies it? The rogue minister in Gujarat who is corrupting the youth must be held accountable,&rdquo; Mevani said, hinting at ministers allegedly profiting from illegal activities.
Mevani further alleged that the BJP government misreported actual drug and liquor seizure figures before the Gujarat Assembly. He demanded a special session of the Assembly and the publication of a white paper. According to him, drugs worth an estimated Rs 64,000 crore had been seized from Gujarat&rsquo;s coastline alone. He also referenced the Latha incident, pointing to factories producing raw materials for synthetic drugs, while claiming that the BJP High Command remained silent during visits to Gujarat.
Highlighting the impact on education, Mevani claimed narcotics were being openly sold near schools, colleges, hostels, and universities. He challenged senior officials, including the DGP and Home Secretary, to conduct raids in constituencies of both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister to seize drugs and liquor.
Addressing the public, he said, &ldquo;If I am saying something wrong, then why are 98 per cent of people supporting me on social media?&rdquo; He reiterated that Harsh Sanghavi must resign. Mevani also announced that Congress would soon launch a helpline to report illegal activities, urging citizens to document and share evidence without fear, framing it as a campaign for the people of Gujarat, not just the Congress party.
Earlier, at a rally in Tharad, Banaskantha, Mevani encouraged men to abandon alcohol, drugs, and gambling, and challenged authorities to shut down illegal establishments in Sanghavi and Patel&rsquo;s constituencies. He also warned police officers, &ldquo;Your belts will come off, remember,&rdquo; and called for the curbing of unlawful activity even around temples.
In response, Deputy Chief Minister Sanghavi and the state DGP criticised Mevani&rsquo;s remarks, while police associations objected to his statements. Mevani later released a video appealing to police families not to become &ldquo;political instruments.&rdquo; A Dalit rally in Amreli also demonstrated in his support, further intensifying the political debate across Gujarat.
