The National Green Tribunal&rsquo;s Principal Bench in New Delhi has transferred a major industrial pollution case from Ahmedabad to its Western Zone Bench in Pune. The matter, listed as Original Application No. 511/2025, was filed by Munir Haji Mohammad Rangwala against the State of Gujarat and other authorities.
The applicant had submitted a letter petition alleging that units associated with the Ahmedabad Hand Screen Printing Association were responsible for severe industrial pollution. According to the complaint, the group&rsquo;s Common Effluent Treatment Plant had remained non-functional for nearly ten months, causing untreated waste to contaminate the Sabarmati River.
Following the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in the Ankita Sinha case, the Tribunal treated the letter as a formal application under its suo motu powers. The Bench, consisting of Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and Dr Afroz Ahmad, reviewed the allegations and found that the issue fell under the jurisdiction of the Western Zone Bench.
The Principal Bench directed the Registry to transfer the case to the Pune Bench for a detailed hearing scheduled on 4 November 2025, subject to approval from the NGT Chairperson. The order was issued on 17 October 2025, marking the next phase of judicial scrutiny into the pollution concerns along the Sabarmati.
