In the wake of the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that killed 241 people, a Vadodara-based organisation has begun the grim task of mass coffin-making. Air India has urgently ordered over 100 coffins to ensure dignified handling and return of victims&rsquo; remains.
By Saturday afternoon, 25 coffins had already been dispatched, with the rest expected in Ahmedabad by night. Edwin, who heads the coffin-making unit, said, &ldquo;It usually takes 2&ndash;3 hours to craft one coffin. But making so many at once for a tragedy of this scale is emotionally overwhelming for all of us.&rdquo;
Each coffin is made from sturdy wood, lined with plastic to prevent leakage, and adjusted to fit the condition of each body. Workers are operating round-the-clock, emotionally shaken by the reality of the loss.
Meanwhile, DNA identification continues at Ahmedabad&rsquo;s Civil Hospital. Bodies will only be released after forensic confirmation.
In a parallel development, the Gujarat branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written to Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, requesting financial and institutional support for MBBS students of B.J. Medical College who were injured or lost their lives in the crash.
The aircraft had crashed minutes after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12, striking the Atulyam building near Meghaninagar, which housed medical students. The IMA emphasised that these young students were &ldquo;the foundation of our future healthcare system&rdquo; and called for fair compensation and recognition for their families.
