Maulana Detained in Gujarat Over Suspected Ties to Pakistan and Suspicious Online Activity
Following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, both central and state authorities have heightened security and surveillance measures. In a related development, the Special Operations Group (SOG) in Gujarat&rsquo;s Amreli district has detained a Maulana under suspicion of having links to Pakistan.
The cleric, identified as Maulana Mohammad Fazal Abdul Aziz Sheikh, had been teaching at a madrasa in Himkhimadipara, Dhari. During questioning, the SOG discovered potential connections to Pakistan, prompting an investigation. Authorities have found seven suspicious WhatsApp groups on his mobile phone, reportedly linked to individuals in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The SOG had been conducting routine checks on individuals suspected of residing illegally in Amreli district when they encountered the Maulana. He was asked to provide proof of residence, but failed to furnish any valid documentation. Subsequently, he was taken to the Dhari police station for further questioning, where it was revealed that he originally hails from the Juhapura area of Ahmedabad.
A preliminary complaint has been registered against Maulana Sheikh, and his mobile phone has been confiscated for forensic examination. Investigators are now working to determine the duration of his stay in Amreli and the identities of individuals he may have been in contact with.
Commenting on the matter, Amreli Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kharat confirmed that the Maulana was detained due to suspicious behaviour and possible links to Pakistan. "We are conducting a thorough investigation. Any definitive conclusion about his connections with Pakistan will only be drawn after the inquiry is complete," he said.
The incident has raised concerns amid already heightened tensions following the attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to rooting out any domestic networks with foreign ties that may pose a threat to national security.
