Gujarat experienced widespread and intense rainfall over the past 24 hours, severely affecting southern and central regions, while parts of North Gujarat also saw significant precipitation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded extremely heavy rainfall in various areas, with the highest figures reported from Dangs and Valsad districts.
According to the official rainfall data, Dang-Ahwa in Dangs district registered 9.8 inches of rain, followed by Kaprada in Valsad with 9.5 inches. Both talukas experienced rainfall above the IMD&rsquo;s threshold for &ldquo;extremely heavy&rdquo; rainfall, which is set at more than 8.1 inches. Vaghai and Subir in Dangs received 7.7 and 7.1 inches respectively, while Dharampur in Valsad saw 6.6 inches. Vansada in Navsari measured 6.3 inches of rain, Khergam recorded 4.8 inches, and Dolvan in Tapi district reported 4.1 inches.
Central Gujarat was not spared, with Mansa in Gandhinagar logging 3.9 inches and Sutrapada in Gir Somnath also appearing in the list of the ten most affected talukas with 3.8 inches. Rainfall impacted 160 talukas across the state within the 24-hour period ending at 6 am. Among these, 34 talukas reported rainfall exceeding 2 inches, which can result in urban flooding and road closures when occurring within a brief timeframe.
Ahmedabad experienced a sudden and forceful spell of rainfall beginning shortly after 1:15 am on the intervening night of June 18-19. The rain continued for hours, accumulating 2.5 inches by morning. Although the IMD had issued a forecast predicting up to moderate rain for the city, the actual downpour surpassed this, entering the heavy rainfall category&mdash;particularly in localities such as Paldi. The night was marked by persistent thunderclaps and regular flashes of lightning.
Due to the intensity of the rainfall in Ahmedabad, low-lying areas were waterlogged, prompting the closure of the Mithakhali and Akhbarnagar underpasses. The Vasna Barrage gate was opened to manage rising water levels and release excess water from the Sabarmati Riverfront.
Rainfall statistics collected by the state government at 2:00 am indicated that Mansa in Gandhinagar had received over 3 inches between midnight and 2 am. Other rainfall totals included Gandhinagar at 2.68 inches, Dehgam 2.28, Vijapur 1.77, Prantij 1.69, Kheralu 1.57, Visnagar 1.14, Himmatnagar 0.98, Talod 0.91, and Ahmedabad city 0.83 inches. Additional rainfall was also reported from Kapadvanj, Modasa, Kalol and Vadnagar.&nbsp;
Satellite imagery revealed a dense cloud mass concentrated over the North Gujarat region.
Moderate rainfall between 50 mm and 100 mm was observed in talukas across Gandhinagar, Navsari, Gir Somnath, Panchmahal, Kheda, and Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, light showers, ranging from 1 mm to 20 mm, were reported in Dahod, Amreli, Mahesana, Rajkot, Porbandar, and Bhavnagar.
The IMD has advised that rainfall activity is expected to persist in the coming days, especially in the southern and central parts of the state, suggesting that residents should remain alert for potential disruptions.
