A tense roadside argument between a woman motorist and a traffic police officer in Ahmedabad has sparked public outrage after a video of the incident went viral, leading to the suspension of the officer and police cases being filed against both parties.
The incident took place on Friday evening around 6.30 pm at a busy four-way junction in the Paldi area. According to the police, the woman, identified as Bansari Thakkar from Vasna, was stopped for allegedly jumping a traffic signal. The on-duty officer, head constable Jayanti Zala, asked her to produce her driving licence, which she complied with.
What began as a routine traffic check soon escalated into a heated exchange, with both sides raising their voices. The woman requested permission to move her vehicle to the side of the road. During the argument, she asked the officer to show his identity card. Although the officer did so, the ID card reportedly slipped from her hand while being returned and fell on the road.
Police officials said this moment triggered the officer&rsquo;s anger. A video recorded by the woman, which later spread rapidly on social media, shows the officer suddenly slapping her while she was still seated on her vehicle. The footage further captures the woman stepping away after the slap, as the officer continues shouting. In later visuals, the officer appears visibly agitated, bending down to pick something up and attempting to grab a stick from another policeman before being restrained by colleagues.
The woman has alleged that she was slapped multiple times and verbally abused, claiming she suffered injuries to her eye, ear and cheek, including bleeding from her eye. She said she panicked after the assault and called the emergency helpline number 112.
Later that night, she went to the Paldi police station to file a complaint. According to her, police personnel initially refused to register it and warned her that a counter-case could be filed against her. She also claimed that a woman police inspector cautioned her about cross-complaints before asking her to leave. Eventually, she submitted a written complaint around 11.50 pm.
Police officials stated that since the matter involved traffic enforcement, the woman was advised to approach the traffic police. &ldquo;Cross-complaints were suggested because there had been clashes on both sides, creating a situation where complaints could be filed against each other,&rdquo; a senior officer said.
After the video gained widespread attention online, senior police officers stepped in and suspended head constable Jayanti Zala with immediate effect. Confirming the action, a senior traffic police official said, &ldquo;I accept that there has been some fault on the part of the police constable,&rdquo; adding that officers are expected to show restraint and deal with citizens respectfully.
At the same time, police have also registered a case against the woman, accusing her of obstructing traffic and using abusive language. Authorities have said they are also checking whether she has any past record of similar confrontations with traffic personnel.
The incident has once again reignited debate over police conduct, accountability, and the treatment of citizens during routine traffic enforcement in urban India.
