The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation is preparing to open Gujarat&rsquo;s first gas-based animal crematorium, designed for the dignified and scientific disposal of pet and other animal carcasses. The facility, already constructed, will be inaugurated soon and is expected to improve urban hygiene, cleanliness, and environmental protection.
Until now, carcasses were buried or openly burned, causing odour, pollution, and health hazards. The new system, powered by PNG gas, will provide an eco-friendly alternative. Officials said it is equipped with primary and secondary chambers for complete combustion and fitted with pollution-control technology as per CPCB norms.
The cremation process will take between 45 minutes and two hours depending on carcass size, reducing remains to just 5&ndash;10% inert ash. With a capacity for 50 to 500 kg, the facility can handle pets like dogs and cats as well as larger animals such as cows and horses.
Authorities noted the centre will help prevent soil and water contamination, reduce the spread of diseases, and allow citizens to give their pets a respectful farewell.
The project, developed with support from Gujarat Gas Limited, will receive free gas supply for the first year. In subsequent years, the company will cover 75%, 50%, and 25% of the supply cost, respectively. Gujarat Gas also plans to extend similar support to other municipalities across the state.
Officials described the initiative as a &ldquo;significant step towards resolving sanitation issues while advancing environmental conservation.&rdquo;
