Gujarat experienced its highest June rainfall in 10 years, with over 303 mm recorded across the state, accounting for 34.36 per cent of the annual average. The southwest monsoon entered the region on June 16 and enveloped the entire state by June 18, overtaking the previous June record of 200.83 mm set in 2023.
South Gujarat registered the most precipitation, receiving 552.93 mm, followed by East Central Gujarat at 291.89 mm and Saurashtra with 262.66 mm. North Gujarat recorded 183.61 mm, while Kutch followed closely with 173.61 mm. District-wise, Valsad topped the charts with 852.17 mm of rainfall, trailed by Dangs at 688 mm and Navsari with 601.83 mm.
Three districts &mdash; Banaskantha, Patan, and Mehsana &mdash; have reported less than one-fourth of their average seasonal rainfall so far. In contrast, Bhavnagar and Botad have already surpassed the halfway mark.
This June&rsquo;s rainfall has significantly outpaced the corresponding period last year, when only 2.80 inches (approximately 71 mm) had been recorded by the end of the month. Compared to this, the state has already received about 11 inches (31.62 per cent of the monsoon average) as of Monday.
In terms of rainfall progression across regions, South Gujarat has reached 34.25 per cent of its seasonal average, East Central Gujarat stands at 33.35 per cent, Saurashtra has achieved 32.32 per cent, Kutch 28.83 per cent, and North Gujarat 23.53 per cent.
Rainfall has been widespread at the taluka level. One taluka has registered more than 40 inches of rainfall, 26 talukas have received between 20 and 40 inches, 89 talukas between 10 and 20 inches, 41 talukas received 5 to 10 inches, and five talukas have received between 1 and 5 inches.
Heavy showers have had a visible impact on Gujarat&rsquo;s reservoirs. As of 8 am on July 1, the state's 206 dams hold a cumulative 271,689 million cubic feet (mcft) of water, reaching 48.68 per cent of their collective capacity, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).
The Sardar Sarovar Dam is currently at 48.23 per cent of its total storage, holding 161,119 mcft of water. The reservoir&rsquo;s full capacity corresponds to a level of 454.98 feet, while the current level is 385.53 feet. The dam is receiving 13,478 cusecs of inflow, with an outflow of 35,103 cusecs being discharged into the river.
Across the state, storage levels vary. Full capacity has been reached in 15 dams, while 37 are holding between 70 and 100 per cent. An additional 35 dams are between 50 and 70 per cent full, 53 fall in the 25 to 50 per cent range, and 66 currently have less than 25 per cent of their storage capacity.
Water levels have triggered various alerts: 21 dams are currently marked as high alert, 12 are under alert status, and 19 are flagged with a warning due to ongoing inflows.
Detailed dam figures show significant variation. Brahmani Dam has reached 100 per cent, while Panam (74.26%), Sukhi (72.34%), and Shetrunji (97.44%) are nearing full levels. Other notable reservoirs include Ukai at 48.34 per cent with an inflow of 33,368 cusecs and Kadana at 45.77 per cent, receiving 4,027 cusecs.
By comparison, several dams still hold low reserves: Dantiwada stands at 11.14 per cent, Sipu at 3.78 per cent, and Machchhu-II at 23.01 per cent.
Ahmedabad has recorded its wettest June in a decade, aligning with widespread precipitation across several parts of Gujarat.
Forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warn of continued heavy to very heavy rain in parts of the state. On Tuesday, showers are expected in Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Navsari, and Valsad, as well as the Union Territories of Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli.
Further rainfall alerts are in place for multiple districts on July 1-2, including Mahisagar, Dahod, Panchmahal, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Tapi, Dang, Surat, Amreli, Bhavnagar, and Gir Somnath. A yellow alert remains effective in 13 districts, covering areas such as Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, and Gir Somnath.
In response to the continued rainfall and rising water levels, the state government has intensified its preparedness. Thirteen teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and twenty teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been strategically deployed, with two additional NDRF teams on standby.
The SEOC is maintaining continuous surveillance, while district collectors have been directed to work closely with municipal bodies, ensure that stormwater drainage is operational, and keep relief shelters ready in flood-prone regions.
Authorities have also instructed electricity boards and irrigation departments to monitor river catchments and high-risk reservoirs, ensuring safe water discharge where necessary. Control rooms remain active around the clock, and public advisories have been issued urging people to avoid travel in flooded or low-lying areas.
