One month after the southwest monsoon began sweeping across Gujarat on June 16, the state has accumulated 450.55 mm of rainfall, which represents 51.09% of the expected seasonal average, as per figures shared by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).
Among the five key regions, South Gujarat registered the most rainfall, collecting 822 mm so far&mdash;equivalent to 55.19% of its typical monsoon total. The East Central and Saurashtra regions each received rainfall close to 49.26% of their respective averages, with 396.50 mm and 368.31 mm respectively.&nbsp;
North Gujarat followed with 345.12 mm, equating to 48.01% of its seasonal target. Meanwhile, Kutch saw 282.50 mm, the lowest in absolute terms but the highest completion rate at 58.46%.
Only Botad and Bhavnagar districts have crossed the 75% mark of their average seasonal rainfall. A broader group &mdash; including Kutch, Surendranagar, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Anand, Panchmahal, Chhota Udepur, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, and Valsad &mdash; have recorded between 50% and 75%. The rest of the districts have received at least a quarter of their monsoon quota.
At the district level, Valsad has seen the heaviest downpour, totalling nearly 1,194 mm, followed closely by Dang at 1,083 mm. Navsari, Surat, and Tapi round out the top five with 916.17 mm, 902.00 mm, and 875.57 mm respectively &mdash; all within the rain-rich belt of South Gujarat.
Following a strong spell of rainfall during the initial 10 days of July, the current week has seen a marked reduction in precipitation, a trend expected to continue, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In its latest advisory, the IMD forecasts heavy rainfall at isolated locations in select districts &mdash; Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Dang, Tapi, Navsari, and Valsad &mdash; as well as in the Union Territories of Daman and Dadra &amp; Nagar Haveli. This is likely only until the morning of July 16. Beyond that, from July 16-22, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and surface wind speeds of 30&ndash;40 kmph is expected sporadically across all 33 districts of Gujarat.
The IMD bulletin also outlines a well-marked low-pressure system persisting over northeast Rajasthan and neighbouring northwest Madhya Pradesh as of 11:30 am IST on July 14. This system is linked to an upper-air cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. It is forecast to drift slowly towards the west-northwest over Rajasthan in the following 48 hours.
Additionally, the monsoon trough at sea level presently stretches through Bikaner, the core of the existing low-pressure system over Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, and continues through Siddhi, Ranchi, and the centre of a depression over southeast Gangetic West Bengal and nearby Bangladesh.
Pothole-Plagued Roads Add to Monsoon Misery in Ahmedabad
Even as rains ease across Gujarat, Ahmedabad residents are grappling with deteriorating roads. Despite the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) having sanctioned Rs 10 crore for resurfacing city roads, potholes in numerous areas remain unaddressed, drawing increasing public frustration.
&ldquo;We have to drive slowly and swerve dangerously every few metres just to avoid tyre damage or accidents. Despite several complaints, nothing has changed,&rdquo; said Ronak Shah (name changed), a resident told Benefit News.
Another resident added, &ldquo;It&rsquo;s been raining for weeks now, and the potholes have turned into water-filled craters. School buses and ambulances find it difficult to enter the lane. It&rsquo;s not just an inconvenience anymore &mdash; it&rsquo;s a safety hazard.&rdquo;
In Asarwa, potholes remain unchecked near the outreach office of the BJP MLA, close to the Civil Hospital&rsquo;s doctors' residences. The road connecting Vandematram to the Uma Sharanam flats in Chandlodiya is also severely damaged.
In Ranip, the road outside the AMC&rsquo;s sub-zonal office is in disrepair, while the stretch near Gayatri Vidyalaya has drawn complaints for its poor state.
Nikol ward stands out as the worst-hit locality in the city. Key roads such as Gopal Chowk, Uma Vidyalaya Road, Bahuchar Chowk, Nikolgam Road, and the area surrounding Pancham Mall are peppered with potholes. Trouble spots also include the BRTS road junction at Viratnagar crossroads, directly opposite the AMC East Zone office.
Additional problem areas include Vastral village near the metro station and along the service lanes of the Ring Road, where potholes continue to be a hazard.
While the civic body collects nearly Rs 1,700 crore in property tax from city residents each year, locals say monsoon damages continue to be ignored. In Nikol, public anger erupted recently when residents confronted municipal officials with slogans during a site inspection, citing delayed or absent repair work.
Despite repeated assurances from officials and political representatives to tackle road conditions after every monsoon, multiple areas continue to suffer from poor maintenance, turning annual rainfall into a season of civic inconvenience for many.
