Nishidh Jani, a Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) clerk arrested for allegedly leaking confidential documents to journalist Mahesh Langa, died in Ahmedabad&rsquo;s Civil Hospital after collapsing inside Sabarmati Central Jail late Monday night.
According to Gandhinagar SP Ravi Teja Vasamsetty, Jani was rushed to the hospital by jail staff but was declared dead during treatment. He had a history of lung-related ailments, but his sudden death in custody has raised questions, given the sensitive corruption probe he was entangled in.
Jani&rsquo;s arrest came after police recovered confidential GMB documents during a raid at Langa&rsquo;s residence in October 2024. Langa had already been arrested in connection with a major Goods and Services Tax (GST) scam. A separate case of theft and corruption was filed against Jani under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
His death, just two weeks after his arrest, has cast a shadow on the probe into the alleged leak network within the GMB. With the key accused gone, doubts remain over how far the corruption nexus extended and whether more insiders were involved.
