Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has accorded in-principle approval for a financial package amounting to Rs 3,394.55 crore, aimed at enhancing civic facilities in three recently established municipal corporations, the Surat Municipal Corporation, and two municipalities. This move comes as part of the Urban Development Year 2025 programme underway across the state.
The sanctioned funds fall under the Swarnim Jayanti Chief Minister Urban Development Scheme and will be utilised for a range of initiatives, including infrastructure expansion, development in peripheral areas, and heritage-based projects designed to give towns and cities a distinct character.
Surat Municipal Corporation has received the largest share of the funding, with Rs 3,263 crore allocated for a comprehensive range of improvements. These include enhancements in core physical infrastructure, improved public services, transportation upgrades, urban aesthetics, and the expansion of amenities in adjoining growth regions.&nbsp;
Planned works include installation of stormwater drainage systems, expansion of water supply lines, implementation of tertiary water treatment and reuse mechanisms, energy-efficient lighting installations, and improved systems for managing solid waste across multiple city zones and peripheral areas.
Within the same scheme, Rs 66.94 crore has been approved for growth area development in other urban regions. Nadiad Municipal Corporation is set to receive Rs 17 crore for 35 individual initiatives focused on upgrading public lighting, renovating community sanitation blocks, establishing civic centres, and creating green spaces including parks and lakes in newly urbanised parts of the city.
An equivalent sum of Rs 17 crore has been designated for Anand Municipal Corporation, which will utilise the funding to execute nine separate projects. These include the construction of new water reservoirs, laying of connector roads, and installation of stormwater drainage systems in its expanding localities.
Surendranagar Municipal Corporation has secured Rs 28 crore to carry out six projects, all centred on boosting water supply infrastructure in developing areas of the city.
Further, two state municipalities&mdash;Songadh and Bharuch&mdash;have also been included in the development plan. Songadh has been granted Rs 3.99 crore to establish water tanks, lay rising main pipelines, and enhance street lighting in outlying zones. Bharuch will receive Rs 0.95 crore for similar infrastructure interventions in its peripheral urban stretches.
To reinforce the cultural and historical identity of Gujarat's urban centres, funding has also been earmarked for distinctive projects. Surendranagar Municipal Corporation has been approved Rs 35 crore for three initiatives: the first phase of the Wadhwan Heritage City project covering Dholi Pol and Kot Diwal, the development of Hawamahal&rsquo;s historic precinct, and the initial stage of the Jhalawad Heritage Memorial and Museum.
Nadiad Municipal Corporation will benefit from Rs&nbsp; 30 crore devoted to heritage and identity-focused works. Planned developments in this category include the refurbishment and campus enhancement of Ipcowala Hall, restoration of traditional stepwells under the Vav Revival Project, creation of a Heritage Path, establishment of a museum, development of a public event space, and the construction of a multi-purpose community hall.
