In a major move towards strengthening urban infrastructure, the Gujarat government has granted in-principle approval for development works amounting to Rs 1,700.57 crore in a single day.&nbsp;
The allocation, approved by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, covers six recently formed municipal corporations, five municipalities, and the Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar Municipal Corporations. The projects fall under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme.
As per the approved funding, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is set to receive Rs 546 crore, while Gandhinagar will be allocated Rs 32 crore. Among the newly established municipal corporations, Morbi will get Rs 270.08 crore, Surendranagar to get Rs 257.60 crore, Vapi to get Rs 251.91 crore, Anand to get Rs 148 crore, Navsari to get Rs 90.35 crore, and Nadiad to get Rs 71.91 crore.
In addition, several municipalities will benefit from the funding. Vadnagar has been sanctioned Rs 16.37 crore, Himmatnagar to get Rs 7.33 crore, Siddhpur to get Rs 3.74 crore, Halvad to get Rs 4.02 crore, and Bharuch will receive Rs 85.52 lakh.
A total of Rs 676.28 crore has been earmarked for 247 infrastructure initiatives in the newly created municipal corporations. These initiatives include the installation of streetlights, solar energy projects, development of public gardens, beautification drives, drainage systems, traffic roundabouts, stormwater drainage lines, rainwater harvesting units, civic centres, and acquisition of fire safety equipment.
Another Rs 652.78 crore has been approved under the Mukhya Mantri Shaheri Sadak Yojana for road-related projects. These include resurfacing, white topping, renovation, and repairs of roads wider than 60 feet in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Anand, Surendranagar, Vapi, and Morbi.
Under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhya Mantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana, Rs 191.91 crore has been sanctioned for essential services in Surendranagar, Vapi, and Anand. This allocation will fund repairs to filter plants, road construction, storm drainage systems, gutter infrastructure, and water supply improvements.
An additional Rs 31 crore has been approved for developing iconic roads in Anand and Surendranagar. Meanwhile, a provision of Rs 85.52 lakh has been made under the Private Society Public Participation Scheme (Khangi Society Jan Bhagidari Yojana) for installing paver blocks on common plots in societies located within Bharuch Municipality.
To improve drinking water accessibility in newly incorporated urban areas, the Chief Minister has sanctioned Rs 67.35 crore from the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhya Mantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana. This will support water supply projects in Himmatnagar and Siddhpur municipalities, as well as the Morbi Municipal Corporation.
Additionally, a combined amount of Rs 64.02 crore has been approved for Morbi and Vapi municipal corporations and Halvad Municipality. These funds will be used for establishing drinking water pipelines, constructing underground gutters, laying asphalt and cement concrete roads, and building fire stations in outgrowth areas.
The announcement coincides with the observance of Urban Development Year 2025, which the state government is celebrating to advance the state&rsquo;s urban infrastructure.&nbsp;
The initiative draws inspiration from the Urban Development Year introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure as Gujarat&rsquo;s Chief Minister in 2005, when urbanisation was first harnessed as a growth strategy.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel remarked, &ldquo;The amount allocated for the development of urban welfare works will add new momentum to the urban development of the state in the coming days, enabling citizens to realise the goal of &lsquo;earning well - living well&rsquo; through the planned development of cities and urban areas.&rdquo;
The Prime Minister had officially launched the celebration of Urban Development Year on May 27, presenting a vision to transform cities into vibrant centres of economic activity.
