In a major step towards streamlining the administration of Waqf properties in Gujarat, Law Minister Rushikesh Patel on Tuesday approved a fund of Rs 6 crore to carry out GPS-based mapping, land surveys, and digitalisation of the records held by the Waqf Board.
The allocation has been divided into three equal parts: Rs 2 crore will be used for satellite-based geographical positioning of Waqf land, Rs 2 crore has been set aside for comprehensive survey work, and the remaining Rs 2 crore will go towards the creation of a digital platform and the online documentation of these assets.
Speaking at the announcement in Gandhinagar, Patel said, &ldquo;This is more than just a financial allocation; it&rsquo;s a commitment to securing what rightfully belongs to the community and ensuring its proper utilisation.&rdquo;&nbsp;
He further elaborated, &ldquo;We are investing Rs 2 crore specifically for GPS mapping, another Rs 2 crore for thorough survey work, and a further Rs 2 crore for developing a robust Waqf Board website and online digitalisation process. This holistic approach will accelerate the pace of survey, record management, and overall governance.&rdquo;
The purpose of this initiative is to establish precise digital records for all properties registered under the Waqf Board, ensuring the correct demarcation and identification of each asset. It is expected to prevent disputes related to land ownership, remove any questionable or invalid property claims, and help curb unauthorised occupation.
The effort is being implemented in line with the Ummeed Act-2025&mdash;short for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development&mdash;introduced by the Central Government. This legislation promotes transparent and efficient management of Waqf holdings through legal safeguards and digital reform measures.
As part of its objectives, the project is designed to clearly identify and digitally verify each Waqf property, ensure that only legitimate lands are recorded, minimise prolonged legal conflicts, and deter unlawful encroachments.
A senior Law Department official stated, &ldquo;The digitalisation of Waqf properties is a critical step towards preventing misuse and ensuring these assets serve their intended charitable and community purposes. It&rsquo;s about empowering the Waqf Board with accurate data and preventing future irregularities.&rdquo;
