In yet another embarrassment for Gujarat&rsquo;s education system, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is facing backlash after students discovered that their Semester-7 Civil Engineering exam was an exact replica of last year&rsquo;s paper. The &lsquo;Port and Harbour Engineering&rsquo; exam, held on October 13, 2025, was found to be identical to the question paper used on November 19, 2024, with only the date changed.
The repetition was first flagged by students who noticed the uncanny similarity during discussions with faculty members post-exam. Further checks by professors confirmed that the content matched not just last year&rsquo;s paper but also questions students had previously received as assignments. The students have since filed an official complaint.
A former GTU Vice-Chancellor called the incident a result of &ldquo;negligence in the paper-setting process,&rdquo; adding, &ldquo;Many such blunders occur due to the negligence of some professors.&rdquo;
The Gujarat Congress has condemned the incident as a betrayal of student trust. Party spokesperson Dr. Manish Doshi said, &ldquo;Lakhs of students in Gujarat work hard and build their dreams, but GTU&rsquo;s &lsquo;copy-paste&rsquo; functioning plays with their future.&rdquo; He added, &ldquo;Such a major blunder shakes people&rsquo;s faith in the academic system.&rdquo;
GTU Registrar K. N. Kher confirmed the oversight. &ldquo;The paper setter gave the same paper by changing just the date,&rdquo; he said, explaining that sealed packets prevent officials from knowing the content in advance. Kher added, &ldquo;Yes, it is similar&hellip; that individual kept the material in his system,&rdquo; despite instructions to destroy old papers.
The professor responsible, reportedly from a government engineering college, will be summoned next week. A re-exam will be considered after an internal panel submits its findings.
