The BJP in Gujarat has finalised the schedule for electing its State President and National Council members, with results to be declared on October 4.
The reorganisation process, in line with the party&rsquo;s constitution, has been underway since September under election officer Uday Kangad, assisted by Dhaval Dave and Hitesh Patel. It has already covered mandal, district and metropolitan levels.
As per the timetable, nominations will be filed on October 3 between 11 am and 2 pm, scrutinised between 3 pm and 4 pm, with withdrawals allowed until 5.30 pm. If needed, voting will take place on October 4 from 10 am to 11 am, followed by counting and results at 11.30 am. A total of 292 voters are eligible.
Regional Media Convener Dr. Yagnesh Dave said the election would be conducted &ldquo;strictly in accordance with the party&rsquo;s constitution, ensuring transparency and organisational discipline.&rdquo;
Party sources indicated that a consensus candidate is likely, with the national election officer overseeing the process. The leadership change is seen as crucial before the Assembly polls. Speculation is also rife about Union Water Resources Minister C.R. Patil being considered for the BJP&rsquo;s national president role after his joint appearance with Amit Shah in Surat.
Opposition leaders dismissed the exercise. AAP MLA Gopal Italia called it &ldquo;a deception.&rdquo; Congress MLA Tushar Chaudhary said: &ldquo;This is a complete drama by the BJP. We all know what is going to happen. Only one person will submit the form and that person will be chosen. There is nothing called upholding the values of democracy by conducting the so-called elections within a political party, because those elections will not be transparent and just.&rdquo;
