Over 1,200 ASHA workers in the Gandhinagar district have launched a protest against the Gujarat government&rsquo;s directive making online reporting through the TAKO mobile application compulsory. These frontline healthcare workers, who deliver primary healthcare services in villages, have suspended work and demonstrated outside the district panchayat office since Tuesday.
The protesting workers submitted representations to the District Development Officer, Health Minister, and Chief Minister, urging immediate action. Their demands include minimum wages, regularisation in Class-IV service, Diwali bonus, annual uniform sarees, 180 days of maternity leave, life insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh, and allowances for staying with patients during deliveries.
Workers alleged pressure to adopt the online system, saying many &ldquo;do not possess smartphones capable of running the app and cannot afford to purchase new devices on an incentive of only Rs 2,000 per month.&rdquo; They also cited network issues and the requirement to upload photographs without beneficiaries, risking loss of incentives.
Speaking to Benefit News, a worker said, &ldquo;The new rules, imposed even during the festive season, have made it difficult for them to celebrate Diwali with their families.&rdquo; On the government side, Dr Nilam Patel, Additional Director (Public Health), said, &ldquo;This is an administrative issue.&rdquo;
