Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has been officially identified among the victims of the tragic plane crash on June 12 through DNA testing, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi confirmed on Saturday.
A dedicated team of forensic experts had been working continuously to match DNA samples of the deceased with those of their family members. After three days of meticulous verification, Rupani&rsquo;s identity was confirmed.
Speaking to the media, Sanghavi said that Rupani&rsquo;s body will now be taken to Rajkot for cremation. Final decisions regarding the last rites will be made by his family.
Gujarat Health Minister Rishikesh Patel said, &ldquo;Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi met Rupani&rsquo;s family and informed them about the confirmation. The state government will support the funeral arrangements as per the family's wishes.&rdquo;
Legislator Reenaben Patel also confirmed that a large number of Rupani&rsquo;s supporters have gathered in Rajkot to pay their final respects.
Rupani was one of the 241 casualties aboard Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad en route to London. He was reportedly travelling to visit his wife and daughter.
The sole survivor of the crash was rescued with minor injuries. The rest perished in what is now considered one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent Indian history.
DNA identification in such disasters is a detailed and time-consuming process, often taking up to 72 hours or more, especially when remains are severely damaged.
